The Learning First Alliance
is an unprecedented, permanent collaboration of twelve national
education organizations that have united to support the strength
and commitment of more than ten million Americans working to improve
student learning at the local, state, and national levels. For the
first time, the Learning First Alliance brings together leaders
from all levels of the education community who have worked individually
to improve public education, although not always in a coordinated
effort. Member organizations represent teachers, principals, parents,
teacher educators, local and state school boards, school administrators,
curriculum experts, and national, state and community leaders. Since
its founding in January 1997, the Alliance's member presidents and
executive directors have met regularly to advance a common agenda
to improve public education.
The Alliance strives to deliver common messages on core issues facing
America's schools, align priorities, share and disseminate success
stories, encourage collaboration at every level, and work toward
long-term systemic change based on solid research.
The goals of this collaboration are threefold:
- To ensure that high academic expectations are held for all students;
- To ensure a positive and supportive place of learning for all
students; and
- To engage parents and community members in helping students
achieve high academic expectations
Initially, the Alliance's member organizations have chosen to focus
their efforts on improving student achievement in reading and mathematics.
In mathematics, the Alliance's goal is for virtually all students
to successfully complete a challenging K-12 mathematics curriculum
that includes mastery of content currently included in Algebra I
and Geometry by the end of ninth grade. The Alliance's mathematics
action plan, Every Child Mathematically Proficient, advances research-based
strategies to elevate American students to world class levels in
mathematics.
